Michael graduated from North Winneshiek in 1987 where he was active in FFA. After graduation he attended Kirkwood Community College and graduated in 1989 with a degree in Horticulture. Fie is currently employed at Donaldson Company in Cresco.

Michael and Lynette have one son Anthony Michael. Anthony was named after his greatgrandfather Anthony Balk of Waucoma, IA. Anthony was baptized in May 1994 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Locust. Michael, Lynette and Anthony now reside in Cresco, IA.

Henry, Myles and Josephine (Ward)

This family photo of Myles and Josephine Flenry with their daughters, Mariette Henry Johnson and Caryl Henry Finnerty was taken in December, 1977 at New Ulm, MN, where Mariette and Ronald Johnson live. Caryl and Jack Finnerty and family were visiting from Virginia and anticipating a move to Korea.

Myles passed away suddenly after helping a neighbor “hay”. Valiant attempts from the Decorah rescue squad and neighbors could not revive him. Caryl was alerted of his death within a short time in Korea by phone, but not before she had a visit from Myles via his "spiritual ghost" followed by the phone ringing announcing his death.

Myles Edward Henry was born in Canoe Township, Winneshiek Co., 10 Jan 1899. He was the eldest son of Thomas J. Henry born 1880 in Canoe Twp. and Anna Madden born 1874 in Bluffton Twp. His father Thomas had been the youngest son of the immigrant, John Henry, born about 1850 who came to Winneshiek Co. as a bachelor and bought farm land from the government. John’s wife, Ellen Daly born in 1839, was the maiden sister of a neighbor Abby Daly Malanaphy.

John departed Ireland with his brother but was separated in New York while looking for work. A man told them that he would hire whomever could throw a sack of salt up on a wagon. John was the winner and his brother then agreed to look for work elsewhere. They never found each other again. Eventually, John worked for the railroad and found his way to Calmar, IA and the Winneshiek area.

Myles’s sisters were Stella and Nellie. (Mrs. Francis Donlan), and his 3 brothers were John, Richard and James.

Myles attended country school and Valders Business College in Decorah. He married Josephine Ward (b. 1899) in 1938. She was the proud owner of a convertible Model “T" Ford Roadster and a country school teacher for many years. She was born in Hanover Twp., Allamakee, Co., the daughter of William Ward and Ann Cavanaugh, all early settlers of that area.

Myles and Josephine farmed in Madison Twp., and were the parents of 2 children: Mariette and Caryl. They were members of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Myles farmed and Josephine sold wedding invitations into the second generation of customers. At the time of her death, a 70-year old ex-pupil came to pay his respects to “the best teacher he had ever had”, even though she was only 18 at the time.

Mariette graduated from LPN nurse’s training and worked for several years in Geriatrics in New Ulm, MN where her husband, Ronald Johnson, worked for Land O'Lakes as an agronomist and later became a CPA.

Their daughter, Ann Johnson Hunt is a graduate of St. Thomas College in St. Paul, MN and worked in banking.

Their son, Mark also graduated from St. Thomas in business. James graduated from the University of Minnesota in Political Science. Their youngest son, Michael was a 1994 graduate of West Point.

Caryl is a graduate of Mt. Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, IA and was an elementary teacher. She married John Finnerty, a career Army officer from Boston, MA. They are the parents of: Cathy, Erin and John.

Myles died in 1978 and Josephine moved to Decorah for a few years before retiring to the Aase Haugen Home where she died in 1988. They are buried in St. Benedict's Cemetery.

Herold, Andrew and Anastasia (Bouska)

Andrew Herold was born 28 Mar 1849 near Buffalo, New York, the son of Bernard and Mary (Leopold Henry) Herold. (See Bernard Henry History). His wife Anastasia Bouska was born 6 Apr 1855 in Sumner Twp. the daughter of Frank and Barbara Bouska.

When Anastasia was about six weeks old she was carried 16 miles over Indian trails by her mother to the Old Mission near Festina for Baptism. After their marriage 25 May 1875 by Father Mikota in St. Wenceslaus Church, Spillville, IA., Andrew and Anastasia bought land from the government in Jackson Twp. about three miles west of Ft. Atkinson. (The present farm of Jack and Ann Herold). They had 11 children: Joseph (d. at 18 months); Frances married George Riehle; Eleanora (d. at 2 years of age); Mary married Joe Holland; Martin married Mayme Baker; Lenora
